INTRODUCTION TO THE HISTORY OF RADIO RANDY.
After 43 years of daily radio broadcast business, I am now standing on the sidelines. I retired recently from radio. At least in the sense that I am working in a radio station building every day. I have loved radio since I was 5 or 6 years old and still do. It is all I ever wanted to do. With some great support from my family and some great mentors along the way I was able to enjoy a very long career doing something I loved. I know that many people are not that fortunate. To be able to really love their work and look forward to going in to work each day. I never lost that. At stop lights in the morning on the way to whatever station I was working at, I would look at people around me, knowing that many, we're going to a job they hated. Meanwhile I was thinking about three or four things that I wanted to do to improve my radio station, and couldn't wait to get to work to implement them. That was a gift I think. To be able to really enjoy work.
Now that I am out of the day to day in a radio station I turned to one aspect of the business that I really love. Music scheduling! Creating a daily music log for the station, that determines the day's playlist. I believe there is a science and an art to this process which I have refined over that last 4 decades. The bottom line for a music station: The music has to be right or the other content offered won't really matter! So I am in the process of adding client stations to my roster and keeping busy cranking out music logs.
In this blog I will reflect on my radio history and how my love of radio drove me forward, but also created challenges along the way both professional and personal. My family often was forced to sacrifice as I advanced my career and that often makes me question some of the choices I made. I worked long hours for many years while my kids were young. I missed a lot. I used to beat myself up. But I finally came to the realization that while I missed things along the way, I can be there for them now, now that they are grown and that may even be more rewarding.
The History of Radio Randy is my story and I look forward to sharing it with you.
